Solar collectors – a great and sustainable way to make the summer heat work for you!

Solar collector systems – a sustainable solution for hot water and heating
When looking for an energy-efficient and environmentally friendly heating solution or a way to prepare hot water in your household, you have probably come across solar collectors – a technology that uses solar energy to generate heat.
How do solar collectors differ from solar panels?
Although solar collectors are often confused with solar panels, the key difference lies in their functionality. Solar panels convert solar radiation into electrical energy, while solar collector systems convert solar energy directly into thermal energy, which is transferred to a heat carrier – for example, a liquid that circulates through the collector system.
Effective types of solar collectors for the Baltic climate
We offer two main types of solar collectors that are particularly suitable for Latvian climatic conditions:
- Flat-plate solar collectors – ideal for homes with the possibility of ensuring optimal installation orientation towards the sun. They are durable and long-lasting even in changing weather conditions, but they can only operate with the same efficiency as vacuum collectors under certain, perfect conditions.
- Vacuum tube collectors – effective even on cloudy days and in winter, as they provide a high level of heat gain even at lower solar intensity. They are more versatile in installation, but slightly more fragile compared to flat-plate collector solutions.
Use of solar collectors for hot water preparation and heating
By combining a solar collector system with a multifunctional storage tank, it is possible to ensure not only efficient hot water preparation, but also support for the central heating of the house. This is particularly useful during transitional seasons – spring and autumn – as well as during mild winters, when collectors can provide partial heat supply to the heating system.
How to choose the most suitable solar collector solution?
In order to choose the most suitable solar collector system for a private house, apartment building or summer cottage, we recommend that you carry out an individual assessment, taking into account:
- The location of the building and the slope of the roof
- The existing hot water preparation solution
- Water consumption and number of household members
- Preferences for heating support
